CommBank becomes next big bank to offer Apple Pay

It looks like CommBank customers will be starting of the new year with a brand new feature, as the major bank has today announced that Apple Pay will be made available to customers from January 1.

The news may come as a shock to many Aussies who were under the impression that the bank was hesitant to embrace Apple’s payment platform.

Up until now, CommBank customers were able to make wallet-less payments with ‘tap and pay’, which allowed customers to make MasterCard PayPass payments with their smartphones.

But according to Group Executive of Retail Banking Services, Angus Sullivan, it was decision the bank was more than happy to make.

“We recently wrote to our customers asking them what the bank could do differently and we received lots of excellent suggestions,” he said.

“One of the things we heard repeatedly from our customers is that they want Apple Pay and we’re delighted to be making it available in January 2019.”

Playing catch up

In July last year, Mozo reported on ANZ becoming the first of of the big four to offer Apple Pay and Android Pay to debit and credit card customers, in addition to the bank’s own ANZ goMoney.

And while Westpac customers will have to wait a little longer to use Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay is available for use.

At the moment, only 28 banks in the Mozo database offer Apple Pay and with CommBank becoming the second major bank to offer the feature, it may only be a matter of time before Westpac and NAB give in and follow.

UPDATE: Big banks, Westpac and NAB are tipped to offer Apple Pay within the following weeks due to a number of customer complaints in response to CommBank's decision to introduce the payment system while the other big banks lag behind.

But while this may be good news for Westpac and NAB customers, the future doesn't look promising for instant payment app, Beem It - a service backed by NAB, CommBank and Westpac.
