Foxtel's new Flash streaming service offers news content live and on demand

Foxtel has launched their latest streaming offering into the market, with the news-focused ‘Flash’ offering around the clock live and on demand coverage to more than 20 local and international outlets.

The launch follows increased uptake of streaming services over the last year, with pandemic restrictions forcing more Aussies to stay at home and rely on their broadband connections to deliver entertainment.

Flash joins Foxtel’s two other streaming services: the sports-oriented Kayo and the VOD service Binge. Foxtel says Flash is the first of its kind in both Australia and internationally, with its focus on news content separating it from other streaming offerings.

Flash connects users to a range of trusted news sources both local and global, including AL Jazeera, BBC World News, Sky News Australia, Fox News and CNN International. Interestingly, the service does feature some channels that aren’t already available on the Foxtel pay-tv network.

The service will cost users $8 per month, making it the cheapest of Foxtel’s streaming offerings. Like most other streaming platforms, Flash is available on mobiles, computers, tablets and TVs, and offers users personalisation to prioritise topics and sources that interest them the most.

The last year has seen Aussie homes signing up to more streaming services, with video, music and gaming subscriptions all on the rise. While the pandemic no doubt contributed to an increase in entertainment subscriptions, an uptake in faster NBN plans has also allowed more households to partake in streaming more efficiently.

Flash launches in an area of its own, attempting to interest news-watchers with its unique offering that for now stands without competition in the market. Foxtel declined to provide any specific targets for subscriber numbers, with the service leading the way into the yet-untested news streaming market.
