EnergyAustralia's latest offer adds to options for summer savings

Summer has officially begun and if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to get your summer home cooling plans into action. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, this December nighttime temperatures across the country are expected to be warmer and if you live in Southern Australia, overall it will be a hotter month than average.

For households looking to compare energy plans to help cut down on summer power bills, EnergyAustralia has just launched a Carefree Summer promotion giving new customers in NSW, VIC and SA who sign up for its Flexi Home Saver Plan a chance to win one of six summer holidays or a bill holiday to the value of $300.

EnergyAustralia is the latest provider turning up the the heat with competitive deals and discounts on power plans. Other provider incentives include Dodo’s $100 cash credit on your first bill and Origin Energy’s $50 credit when you sign up online.

According to Mozo’s energy comparison services, an Australian family can save $270 on their electricity bill annually by switching from the average priced plan to the best deal in the area.

Here are some tips to help you find the best discount offer for your home:

  1. Cash vouchers: Of course an upfront cash credit sounds very tempting but don’t forget to check if the ongoing usage charges are higher than other plans because that could mean higher bills in the future.

  2. Pay on time discount: Paying all your utility bills on time is a great habit but if you’re not a stickler for deadlines then you could be better off by going for a plan that has a lower standard tariff than a heavily discounted plan with strings attached.

  3. Direct debit discount: This is a great way to make sure you always pay on time, but if you’re switching providers you must remember to cancel your direct debit account with the existing provider to avoid any confusion later.

  4. Compare all the deals: Last but certainly not the least, compare all the available discounts based on your household’s usage habits and payment preferences.

Summer bill proof your home by:

  • Drawing the curtains closed during the day to prevent the sun’s heat from warming up your house. In the evenings, leave the windows open to let the breeze cool your home for free!

  • Shutting out rooms that don’t need to be cooled when you’re using the aircon so that the air-conditioner can work faster and more efficiently.

  • Increasing the efficiency of your air-conditioner by cleaning the air filters.

  • Keeping the temperature of the refrigerator is at its efficient best. Your fridge is running 24 hours a day, every day and you want to make sure it’s working efficiently. The ideal temperature for an energy efficient fridge is between 3°C and 5°C and for a freezer it is between -15°C and -18°C.
