Western Australia storm season starts 1 November. Are you insured?

If you live in north-west WA now is the time to ensure you have adequate insurance ahead of the cyclone season commencing on 1 November, said the National Insurance Brokers Association.

While the risk of flooding and cyclone is lower than previous years, NIBA’s chief executive Dallas Booth still cautions residents to check if insurance arrangements are in order as “there is still the potential for communities to be devastated by storm events.”

“We’ve seen enough examples in recent years of the damage that can be caused by cyclones and storms in a very short amount of time, such as the Exmouth floods in April this year,” said Booth.

Booth suggested speaking to a qualified insurance broker to see if the most important things are adequately covered, as insurance can be complex to understand and Mozo advised Aussies to search the insurance market for a competitive policy.

Western Australia’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services said, “dangerous storms are the most common natural hazard in Australia and on average, cause more damage and destruction than cyclones, earthquakes, floods and bushfires.”

Here are DFES’ tips for preparing for storm season:

1. Trim branches around your home and hire a contractor to clear trees from powerlines.

2. Check your roof and gutters for damage or loose material.

3. Clear gutters and downpipes of leaves and blockages so they don’t over flow after heavy rain.

4. Store or weigh down loose objects around your home.

5. Prepare an emergency kit with a portable battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and a first aid kit.

6. Keep up to date with the latest information before, during and after a storm.
