Australia's $1.4billion spend to show appreciation for mum.

Australian's are expected to spend almost $1.4 billion on spoiling mum this Mother's Day, up 2.7 percent from 2012. And taking mum out for a meal will be the top way that Aussies choose to show their appreciation, according to the IBISWorld Mother's Day spending forecast for 2013.

According to the report, Australians will spend 3 times more spoiling mum than they did on dad. The average spend on a Mother's Day gift this year is expected to be around $77.21 compared to the $37.05 spent on Father's Day. Take no offence dad's, it's been said for one reason that food, alcohol, sporting goods and tools leave little option of choice for gifts.

So how exactly are Australians planning to spoil mum this weekend? Cafes and restaurants are sure to be bustling with $298 million expected to be spent on dining out, up 4.2 percent from last year and making this the most popular Mother's Day gift.

"Dining out is relatively easy to organise and is a relaxing event for the whole family. It is also often an activity organised in addition to a gift", IBISWorld general manger Ms Karen Doble said in the report.

However, pampering mum is the gift gaining the most popularity. Up 5.5 percent since last year, $123.6 million is expected to be spent on massages and day spa vouchers this year.

Other popular items include jewellry, chocolate, houseware, cosmetics and flowers.

While it's obvious that Australians won't be holding back when showing appreciation for their mums this weekend, those who get a little carried away can compare balance transfer credit cards at Mozo on Monday morning.
