Qantas cuts payment surcharges.

Qantas has announced immediate reductions to the surcharges on payments made by credit or debit card, according to the News Limited Network.

The airline has announced that debit card surcharge fees for domestic flights will be cut from $7,50 down to $2,50, while international flight surcharges have been slashed from $30 down to just $10. Customers paying by credit card will see their surcharges cut just 70 cents for domestic flights down to $7 and remain at $30 for international flights.

The move makes Qantas the first airline to adhere to the surcharge payments rules put in place by the Reserve Bank of Australia back in March 2013. The new changes will not apply to the Qantas owned Jetstar. However, following a petition by 43,000 Jetstar customers against the $8,50 booking fee, the airline has put its surcharges under review.

A number of airlines and companies in numerous other industries have yet to reduce their credit card surcharges to a 'reasonable cost of acceptance,' since the rule came into place, but this may soon be about to change with the possibility of regulation being increased depending on the outcome of a current review by the Federal Treasury.

Australians may finally be seeing the end in sight to excessive payments on surcharges but many may still be unaware that they could be paying unnecessarily high fees and charges to their bank on their credit card or debit card.
