Young people driving in a car with the best car insurance in Australia.

Every Aussie driver should make sure they consider car insurance policies to match their specific wheels. Each car and driver has a different story, so you’ll need to research and compare car insurance quotes to find a policy that suits your circumstances.

But if you want the broadest level of cover for your car, you may want to look at going down the comprehensive car insurance road. Mozo has scouted out and compared the best comprehensive car insurance policies in Australia for the Mozo Experts Choice Car Insurance Awards.

Each year, the Mozo expert judges look for car insurance policies offering the best value and best quality for Australian drivers. In September 2020, the judges analysed 66 different policies to uncover the very best in car insurance available to drivers into 2021.

So, if you’re considering switching car insurance companies or looking for a better deal on your existing policy, read up on a few of the winners below.

The best car insurance policies in 2021

Budget Direct Gold Comprehensive Car Insurance*
  • 15% buy-online discount
  • New-for-old replacement (see conditions below)
  • Not-at-fault rental car cover

Budget Direct is Mozo’s current Value Insurer of the Year. This title, along with multiple insurance awards, shows its delivering consistently low prices while maintaining solid cover for customers.

The Gold policy includes useful features that’ll keep you driving smoothly like hire car cover for 14 days after a theft or not-at-fault accident. You’ll also be covered by new-for-old car replacement (when the car is under two years old or has driven less than 40,000km), $500 of personal property cover and $1,000 for replacement keys. You can receive a premium discount and get 15% off your first year’s cover simply by applying for the policy online.

Woolworths Comprehensive Car Insurance*
  • Drive Less, Pay Less policy option
  • 15% buy-online discount
  • Rideshare cover

This is a great car insurance option for Aussies who don’t drive very often. Woolies’ Drive Less, Pay Less policy option gives drivers a premium discount when they set and stay under an annual kilometre limit. The Woolworths comprehensive policy also includes cover for people using their cars to work as drivers through rideshare apps like Uber. Car insurance provided by rideshare companies often does not cover damage to your own or other vehicles, so this is important to consider.

This policy also provides new-for-old car replacement if your wheels are written off (so long as the car is less than two years old), and there’s a discount of up to 15% on your first year’s premium if you apply online.

Youi Comprehensive Car Insurance*
  • New-for-old-car replacement (within 2 years and 40,000km)
  • $1,000 emergency repairs and accomodation
  • Emergency roadside assistance included

Youi’s policy features many of the flexible options you may be after at a consistently affordable price. In an emergency you can access up to $1,000 to cover repairs without an insurance assessment or accommodation and travel if you’re more than 100km away from home. Emergency roadside assistance is also included as standard in this policy.

You’ll be able to get back onto the road after a theft or an accident where you’re not at fault with Youi’s hire car cover (for up to 14 days). Youi also offers new car replacement if your vehicle is written off and under two years old (as long as there’s less than 40,000km on the odometer). Plus, there’s flexible excess levels to choose from ($400-$2,500). If you opt for a higher excess, you could see a reduction in your premium – just remember it may mean you’ll need to pay a larger amount when you make a claim before your coverage kicks in.

Best Quality Car Insurance winners

The Mozo’s judges look at the range of events covered and claim payout levels when considering which policies to include in the Exceptional Quality Car Insurance awards category.

Some of the key factors that come into this equation include what options there are if your car is written off (like new-for-old replacement), whether or not a rental car is covered during repairs (considering day and dollar limits), the excess choices available at claim time, and other influential policy points.

Best Value Car Insurance winners

While comprehensive car insurance provides the highest level of coverage, it does generally come with a higher premium than other tiers like third party property insurance

But if you want to ensure you’re covered in as many sticky situations as possible (which could end up saving you more at the mechanics), comprehensive insurance could be the way to go. That doesn’t mean you should settle for an overly expensive premium, though.

To find the cheapest comprehensive car insurance policies in Australia, the Mozo experts assessed more than 10,000 car insurance quotes. The balance between price and features was a core consideration, as the judges sought out policies offering consistently lower premiums than competitors.

The Exceptional Value Car Insurance winners with policies available in 2021 include:
