      Pensioners VS 50+

Okay, we get that just because you’re over 50, it doesn't mean you’re necessarily a pensioner. It’s just an old-school term some insurance companies are stuck on. What they really mean is you’re over 50, you know how to drive, you’re likely to have many year’s experience in driving and know the road rules like the back of your hand. All of this adds up to car insurance rewards.

Some of the terms that may mean the same thing as 'pensioner' in car insurance include:

      • over 50s
      • 50+
      • senior
      • older Australians
      • mature Australians

If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to taking out this kind of car insurance, read our seniors car insurance comparison checklist.

What does the basic ‘pensioner’ car insurance cover?

What may come as an optional extra in a standard car insurance policy will often be automatically included for the over 50s. Many insurance companies will also throw a discount on top as well if you're over a certain age or have been driving for a specific number of years.

Some of the things you can benefit by purchasing a pensioner’s car insurance policy without paying more may include:

      • Flexibility in payments. This might mean you can choose between fortnightly, monthly or annual payments, instead of the automatic yearly charge.
      • Overnight accommodation. If your vehicle breaks down while you’re a certain distance away from home, some providers will cover your overnight stay.
      • Car replacement. Depending on how long you’ve held your policy for or how many kilometres you’ve clocked, your insurance provider may replace it with a brand new one if it’s written off. You may even get to choose to take the cash.
      • Lost or stolen. If any of your personal items are lost or stolen while in the car, then you may be eligible for replacement or cash payment. But check the fine print on this one, because if you’re forgetful, you may accidentally leave the car unlocked. If you did, and someone helped themselves to your brand new smart tablet, you may not qualify for a payout.

Please note: What is included in your basic pensioner car insurance cover will vary between providers, so make sure you find out exactly what is included in yours.

What’s not included in your basic cover

Generally speaking, there’ll be a whole bunch of optional extras that are not covered in your basic 50+ car insurance, but double check to make sure! The typical features that you may need to pay more for could include:

      • general wear and tear, and mechanical breakdowns
      • excess-free windscreen protection
      • hire car cover after an at-fault accident
      • roadside assistance

Again, check with the insurance company you choose to see if these are included or not. If they are optional extras, then by paying a few dollars more each month could score you extra peace of mind.

How to save on your over 50s car insurance

Whether you’re still working full or part-time, living off your super or receiving the pension, the cost of living in Australia is high. Mozo understands every dollar counts, which is why we like to get down to the nitty gritty and help everyone save money where they can. And you can too.

Here are four simple ways to make a difference to how much your premium costs, saving you money along the way:

      • Restrict the age of drivers. No matter how much you love your kids or grandkids, you don't have to lend them your prized wheels. Restricting the age of drivers (or only allowing those with a clean driving record behind the wheel) could lower your premium a great deal.
      • Garage you car. Clear out all of the unused items taking up your valuable garage space and actually park your car in its intended home. It'll be a great sprig clean out and help you save on car insurance.
      • Get a multi-policy or family discount. If there’s more than one vehicle listed at your address, you can purchase a multicar or family policy under one name to save on your premiums overall.
      • Purchase your policy online. If you're tech-savvy (or know a willing loved one who is) why not purchase your car insurance online? More and more insurance companies are encouraging customers to purchase their policies online by adding a massive discount on the first year's cover as incentive. You could save 10-30% on your premium.
