Insurance can seem like a pretty mundane topic, covering the basics of cars, homes, travelling, and health. But, did you know there are specialised types of insurance called niche insurance? 

Over time, people have worried about anything and everything that could happen to them. From Bruce Springsteen insuring his vocal cords to “cold feet” wedding insurance, and bed bug insurance, there seems no end to what’s available. 

What is niche insurance?

Niche insurance is any kind of insurance that does not fit into any of the usual categories of insurance. This cover ranges from the more reasonable to the downright crazy. Some are issued as joke gifts although the more ridiculous sounding ones do have their own serious claims that were or intended to be made.

Remember, always read the PDS to make sure you’re covered for what you need under your policy.

So let’s get into those worries that you need insurance for!

1. Meteor Impact Insurance

Believe it or not, we already covered this one in an article about weird home insurance cover. Depending on your home insurance, you may be covered from falling space debris and satellites that damage your home. 

However, there’s a good chance that civilisation destroying impact is probably not going to be covered (and even if it was, good luck finding anyone left to file the claim to), so read the fine print.

2. Supernatural Phenomena Insurance

We all know about life insurance, but what about insuring yourself from the dead? Whether you’re suffering death or dismemberment from a ghost, vampire, or zombie, there’s apparently some companies out there that insure people for those incidents. 

Well, to be honest, if a poltergeist goes around smashing your stuff you probably just want to get some contents insurance.

3. Loch Ness Monster Insurance

In the 1970s Lloyds of London underwrote the insurance for whisky producer Cutty Sark, when the company offered a reward for the capture of the monster. The risk was covered with a premium of £2,500. That’s not the only instance of insurance when it comes to the monster. 4. Body Insurance

What do you do if you’re a guitarist and lose the use of your hands? For some celebrities, certain career necessary/defining body parts are insured in case of damage. This has led to people like Keith Richards insuring his hands, and Julia Roberts her smile.

5. Alien Abduction Insurance

Cue the X-files theme because in Florida, the Saint Lawrence Agency offers $10 million in coverage in the event of an alien abduction occurring. While it is a gag policy—supposedly only paying out a dollar a year—they have apparently paid out an MIT professor who claimed to have been implanted with a device made of materials not of this world.
