NBN address check: How to find if your home is connected

Searching for a new home broadband plan can be difficult if you aren’t sure what services your home is eligible for. With the NBN rollout completed across Australia, most homes are now eligible for plans on the network, but here’s how to find out for sure.

Deciding between the NBN and 5G for your home internet is a good first step, as well as considering other alternatives on the market. If you’ve decided that the NBN is for you, then you will need to check if your address is eligible for the network. 

The easiest way to find if your household is connected to the NBN is by inputting your address on the NBN Co website. You’ll then be told whether or not your address is connected to the NBN access network.

If you are connected, then you’ve joined more than 10 million homes and businesses across Australia with access to the network. If your address is unrecognised, you may have to register with an internet provider who will liaise with NBN Co on your behalf to find if you’re eligible for a connection to be installed. 

On the odd chance your address is recognised but you’re not connected to the NBN network, you may be able to request a satellite or fixed wireless connection from NBN Co. This is how most homes in rural and remote areas are able to connect to the network without fixed cabling leading to their area. 

If you’re not interested in a satellite or fixed wireless connection or for some reason are not eligible even for that type of NBN connection, you may be required to consider some other broadband alternatives. 

While checking if you’re connected to the NBN network is the first step in getting your home broadband up and running, the type of technology used will dictate what plans your household is eligible for. 

Your connection type will be displayed on the NBN Co website after inputting your address, and should also note any scheduled works planned for your area. It is worth mentioning NBN Co are working to upgrade 3 million households to the FTTP connection type by 2023, which allows users to connect to any of the speed tiers.

Once you’ve found your connection type, have a look at the table below to find which NBN speed tiers you will be able to access on a plan. As the technology used dictates the speed the internet will enter your home, purchasing a higher plan than your connection allows will result in you spending money for speeds you can’t access.

Once you’ve found a suitable speed tier that your connection is eligible for, it’s time to find an internet provider and get connected to an NBN plan.
