Govt commits $250 million for energy efficient homes
The Australian government has announced a $250 million program to promote the construction of up to 1000 energy efficient houses for low-income earners speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai in the UAE.
Environment Minister Greg Hunt announced that the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) will provide loans to community housing providers for building homes with energy-saving devices such as double glazing on windows, reported The Australian.

“By financing the development of homes which have the latest energy efficient measures built in, we can lower their long term energy needs and also minimise their impact on the environment,” Mr Hunt said.
“This is a very practical way to drive down household energy costs, which can make a real and positive difference for low income families,” he added.
Community housing providers will also have access to financial support to improve energy efficiency in existing buildings as part of the plan. This process could include steps such as updating appliances, switching to LED lighting, installing solar panels and improving insulation.
This announcement was also welcomed by the Housing Industry Association (HIA), which said the program shows the Government’s willingness to address the housing sector as part of the Government’s response to climate change.
“With the Emissions Reduction Fund focused on large scale emissions, it is appropriate to also promote energy efficiency through government support and investment in the housing sector,” said Kristin Brookfield, HIA Senior Executive Director Building Development and Environment.
“The housing industry has significant scope to improve the performance of 8 million existing homes that are less efficient than today’s new homes. We would welcome the government looking at further options to invest in energy efficiency for existing houses,” she said.
