How to port your mobile phone number

When you get a new mobile phone plan, you actually have the option to keep your phone number.

For the inexperienced, it might sound like a difficult, technical process. But it's actually pretty straightforward in many cases. In fact, your new telco provider will do most of the work for you.

How to port your mobile phone number

Warning: make sure you don’t cancel your existing mobile plan before you receive confirmation that the porting was successful. If you do, you might not be able to get your old mobile phone number back.

Also, you want to make sure that your existing number is actually under your name. If it isn’t, then you’ll need to fill out some paperwork and request a change of ownership.

  1. Compare and purchase a new mobile phone plan
  2. Activate your new mobile phone plan online
  3. When asked if you would like to keep your existing number, say yes
  4. Sit back and relax while your telco provider completes the process.
