Love wheeling around in your Mazda? Well you're certainly not the only one! In 2020 the Japanese-owned car brand was one of the highest selling vehicles in Australia - second only to Toyota.

Not only that but according to carsguide.com.au, Mazda's CX-5 SUV is the most popular SUV in Australia right now. In fact, there were over 20,000 of the CX-5 sold last year alone. Of course the Mazda CX-5 isn't the only Mazda on the Australian market. If you're a city dweller and you'd rather have a hatchback or sedan, there's also the Mazda 2, 3 and 6.

Whatever Mazda model you own, you will likely want to make sure it is properly covered. That means having a high level of car insurance - but exactly how much will this high level of cover cost you?

When it comes to pricing car insurance is not black and white - there are a whole host of factors that affect what you pay. The premium one Mazda 2 driver pays could be completely different to what another Mazda 2 driver pays.

That aside, our team of research experts gathered a whole bunch of data for the 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Awards^ and as a result we can give you some idea of how much insuring your Mazda might set you back in a year. For the awards, our research team gathered a whole range of quotes for six different Mazda models. These included the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6 and the Mazda CX-5.

How much does it cost to insure a Mazda2?

Our research team gathered over 3,000 insurance premium quotes for the Mazda2 for both male and female drivers and a whole range of ages. Using the data gathered in 2020 our experts worked out a car insurance quote range for 80% of customer scenarios: according to this information car insurance premiums for a Mazda2 at the time were between $407 and $1,387.

As you can see this is a pretty big price range. This is often the case with car insurance, as there are a number of factors that affect premium prices.

Other key stats for Mazda2 car insurance costs are:

  • Age: Our research found that annual insurance premiums for a Mazda2 for 16 to 25-year-olds could be between $613 and $2,476. Meanwhile, premiums for over 55s were significantly different, ranging from as low as $333 to $760.
  • Gender: Despite insurance premiums often being reported as cheaper for women, the opposite seems to be true for the Mazda2. The data Mozo collected found that male drivers could be quoted between $393 and $1,191, whereas car insurance quotes for female drivers could be between $412 and $1,453.
  • Location: Where a Mazda2 owner lives can also have some bearing on the cost of insurance. Mozo found that at the lower end of the scale Mazda2 drivers in WA could be quoted as little as $341, while at the higher end drivers in the NT and SA could be quoted as much as $1,721.

Don't have a Mazda2? No worries we have stats on lots of other Mazdas.

How much does it cost to insure a Mazda3?

If you prefer cruising around in a slightly larger car, then the Mazda3 may be more your cup of tea. As part of the car insurance data gathered in 2020, our team collected over 9,000 insurance quotes for the Mazda3!

According to the data gathered, insurance quotes for a Mazda3 for 80% of customer scenarios, could be between $436 and $1,562. As we saw above with the Mazda2, the insurance quote range can be pretty big.

Other key stats for Mazda3 car insurance costs are:

  • Age: As part of our research, our team of data experts gathered insurance quotes for ages ranging from 16 to over 55. The results clearly indicate that age is a factor taken into account when working out premium prices for car insurance. Quote ranges for 16 to 25-year-olds were between $683 and $2,616, whereas for over 55s they were between $368 and $1,053.
  • Gender: As well as age, our team also collected quotes based on gender. We found that at the higher end of the insurance premium range, men could be quoted around $134 more than women for a Mazda3. That's a maximum insurance quote of around $1,642 compared to $1,508.
  • Location: Our team gathered insurance quotes for Mazda3 drivers in all states and territories in Australia. Same as the Mazda2, quotes for drivers in WA were the lowest ranging from as low as $379 to $1,211. Meanwhile quotes for Victorians were the highest, ranging from $630 to as high as $2,145.

Don't drive a Mazda2 or 3? Well keep scrolling because we have stats on even more Mazdas below.

How much does it cost to insure a Mazda6?

If a classic sedan or wagon is more your thing, then chances are you might be a Mazda6 driver.

The good news is that our team gathered more than 2,000 car insurance quotes for a range of Mazda6 drivers in Australia. Using the data our team found that for 80% of customer scenarios car insurance quotes could range from as low as $467 per year, to as high as $1,490 per year.

Other key stats for Mazda6 car insurance costs are:

  • Age: Yet again the data shows that a driver's age will affect what they pay in insurance premiums, regardless of what model car they use to get from A to B. For the Mazda6 car insurance quotes were the highest for 16 to 25-year olds with premiums ranging between $772 and $2,789. Meanwhile, insurance quotes for Mazda6 drivers aged 46 to 55 were much lower, ranging from $397 to $1,281.
  • Gender: While gender is a factor taken into account when calculating car insurance premiums, the difference between quotes for male and female Mazda6 drivers doesn't appear to be huge. The data collected shows that quotes for female Mazda6 drivers could be between $440 and $1,538, while for male Mazda6 drivers the insurance quote range was between $519 and $1,468.
  • Location: For the Mazda6, drivers in the ACT and NSW were quoted the highest. Insurance premium quotes for these areas were between $504 and $2,086. Meanwhile insurance for Queenslanders driving a Mazda6 was almost half that - ranging from as low as $387 to $1,054.

If you don't drive a sedan or a hatchback then never fear, we also had a look at car insurance costs for Mazda's most popular SUV.

How much does it cost to insure a Mazda CX-5?

As mentioned above, Mazda's CX-5 is the most popular SUV in Australia right now. With that in mind we thought it was definitely worth our while looking at how much it costs to insure these more roomy vehicles.

Based on nearly 3,000 car insurance quotes for a range of ages, both male and female drivers and locations, our research team came up with a whole bunch of insurance premium quote ranges. Combining all the factors and based on 80% of customer scenarios, the car insurance quote range for Mazda CX-5 drivers in Australia was between $544 and $1,511. This is the overall quote range, our team also gathered quote ranges based on other factors including age, gender and location.

Other key stats for Mazda CX-5 car insurance costs are:

  • Age: Once again insurance quotes for younger drivers were among the highest. Indeed quotes for 16 to 25-year-olds driving a Mazda CX-5 were between $815 and $2,099. Meanwhile, quotes for over 55s were much lower ranging from $460 to $1,206.
  • Gender: Surprisingly car insurance quotes for male Mazda CX-5 drivers were slightly less than for female Mazda CX-5 drivers. Quotes for male Mazda CX-5 drivers were between $531 and $1,458, while for female Mazda CX-5 drivers they were between $558 and $1,600.
  • Location: For Mazda CX-5 drivers in the NT and SA insurance quotes were the highest, ranging from $617 to as high as $2,007. Meanwhile, quotes for Queenslanders were once again among the lowest - being between $493 and $1,107 for Mazda CX-5 drivers in the Sunshine State.

What might impact your Mazda insurance costs?

To summarise, there are a number of factors that will affect what you wind up paying for insurance. Some of these include:

  • Your age. Generally younger drivers are charged higher insurance premiums. This is because their lack of experience puts them at a higher risk of having an accident and in turn making a claim.
  • Your gender. Male drivers are often seen as a higher risk on the roads than female drivers and as such insurance providers will often hit them with higher premiums.
  • Your postcode. The car-theft-rate where you live will also have an influence on what you pay for insurance. If you live in a fairly quiet neighbourhood where cars are rarely stolen, your insurance premiums may be lower. On the flip side, if your area is known for car-theft you may have to pay more to cover your wheels.
  • Your driving history. Although age will be factored into your insurance premium cost, your specific driving history will also have some bearing. For instance, if you are over 30 you may think you will pay less. However, if you’ve only been driving for a year or two, your premium could still be quite high as you don’t have a lot of experience.

What type of insurance can I get for my Mazda?

Of course the level of cover you get for your Mazda will also impact what you pay. All of the quote ranges above are for comprehensive coverage.

At the most basic level you must have compulsory third party insurance to be able to legally drive in Australia. After this you can choose from:

  • Third party property car insurance
  • Third party property, fire and theft car insurance
  • and comprehensive car insurance
